A look at Arsenal and the keeper conundrum

Do Arsenal need to buy a new goalkeeper?   by Stefan

Two years ago I would have said yes but now I believe Wojciech Szczesny is accomplished enough to be the number one for as long as the club can keep him. There are a lot of rumours going around that Arsenal are in the hunt for a new keeper because of the availability of some world class players for little money.

The keepers that Arsenal are apparently chasing are –

Victor Valdes
Victor Valdes is the current Barcelona keeper and has been there all his career. In this past season there have been many reports saying that he is leaving the Nou Camp at the end of his contract because of continuous failings to negotiate a new one. I personally feel that Valdes will stay where he is but if he is available he will surely be on the radar of many top clubs and Arsenal could win the race to land him.

Julio Cesar
I think Julio Cesar is the most likely of these keepers to move to Arsenal because of his excellent season at relegated QPR. You may be thinking that doesn’t make sense but we all know that Arsenal like a cheap transfer and Julio Cesar is a former Champions League winning goalkeeper of the year who could be available for as little as £4 Million. Not only this but in my opinion he is in the top 3 best goalkeepers of the season because of his outstanding saves and performances that have saved QPR from even worse defeats than they have suffered all season. If he hadn’t been injured a few times and missed a fraction of the season he would have been the best goalkeeper in the league.

Asmir Begovic
The Stoke City Goalkeeper who is likely to be out of a job in the summer when Jack Butland arrives. Manchester United have been chasing him but he would have a better chance of first team football with Arsenal if they were to approach him.

Diego Lopez
The current Real Madrid number one who is keeping Spain captain Iker Cassillas on the bench. It’s likely that Mourinho will leave Madrid soon and whoever takes over probably wont continue to leave Cassillas on the bench which may prompt Lopez to leave and Arsenal would be happy to pick him up for a small sum of money.

Most teams in the world would be lucky to have any of these goalkeepers in their team but I think Szczesny is competent enough to remain the Arsenal keeper. Do Arsenal fans want to keep Szczesny or bring in one of the above? Perhaps an unexpected keeper could be on his way to North London.
